The Corrs

Irish band The Corrs – Andrea, Sharon, Caroline and Jim Corr – are touring Australia, their biggest market in the world. Their debut album Forgiven, Not Forgotten, went platinum eight times in Australia, for sales of more than 580,000. Their new album, Talk On Corners, has already gone platinum, for sales of 70,000

TV WEEK: Why do you think Australians have embraced The Corrs?
SHARON CORR: I don’t know, but it’s our largest territory in the world by far. It’s absolutely wonderful. Australia was the start of our career. I guess the people in Australia are very similar to Irish people. They like to have fun and they saw what they feel, and we’re like that too.
TVW: What is it like being in a band with your brothers and sisters?
SHARON: It’s good, most of the time. Sometimes you just don’t want to look at each other anymore, but we also find each other a great support.
TVW: You’ve been called “Ireland’s favourite sibling quartet”.
SHARON: That’s like saying we’re their favourite one-armed juggler.
TVW: A story in an Irish newspaper recently read, “Two Million Albums And We’re Still Broke!” Surely you’re not starving?
SHARON: No, we’re not starving. The first album did pretty well, but you also have a lot of expenses in this business. The money is starting to come in now, but none of us are millionaires.
TVW: You must be pretty sick of the “Corrs Blimey” headline.
SHARON: Oh yeah, we get that one a lot. We’ve also had “For A Good Corrs” and even “Corr-istmas Present For Fans”.
TVW: What’s been your favourite?
SHARON: My favourite headline wasn’t actually a Corrs pun. It just said “Bland On The Run”. It was our first really derogative article. I thought it was very funny.
TVW: There’s an instrumental track on the new album called Paddy McCarthy. Who is Paddy McCarthy?
SHARON: I have got no idea! The thing about Irish music is there’s all these names of songs and you’ve got no idea of the stories. Paddy is probably very old and turning in his grave.
TVW: Is it true you have recorded a Fleetwood Mac song?
SHARON: We have. It’s for a Rumours tribute album, which is coming out in a couple of months. Our record company wanted us to do it, and Mick Fleetwood heard our tape and luckily enough, he liked it. We got to do Dreams, which is our favourite track on that album.
TVW: An Irish newspaper called Andrea “the sexiest woman in Ireland”. Have good looks been a help or a hindrance for The Corrs?
SHARON: Good looks have definitely been a help. You hear people saying, “It’s not my looks, it’s my talent”, but I think looks are a bonus and we’re very lucky to have them because it’s a visual world we live in.
TVW: Andrea has appeared in The Commitments and Evita. Is she doing any more acting?
SHARON: She’s a voice in a new animated movie, Quest For Camelot. She’s the voice of the heroine, and we all played some of the music. I’m sure Andrea will do more acting, but the band is the priority.
TVW: Have you ever met any famous people?
SHARON: We have actually. One night we had dinner with Warren Beatty and Sean Penn. I remember Warren talking about being vegetarian. It was amazing. Can you imagine four young Irish people in that sort of company? We were gobsmacked.
