Dressed in their very own gym outfits, Hannah and Elle stood next to
their mother, who was starting her yoga.
"In, out," the girls said, mimicking their mother.
The doorbell rang. Caroline sighed. She was sitting on the floor and
seven months pregnant. Dammit.
"I'll get it!" Elle squealed and ran to the door.
Hannah quickly followed after and Caroline cursed under her breath
as she worked on getting up.
Elle flung open the door. "Hi Auntie Andrea! We're doing yoghurt!"
Andrea wrinkled her nose. "Why does that sound so wrong?"
"You have a dirty mind, Andrea Corr," Caroline said, coming out to
the door.
"You didn't tell me you were doing yoghurt, Caroline," Andrea smirked.
"Yoga, Andrea," Caroline corrected.
"Whatever. I need your help."
"Mammy! We're doing yoghurt!" Hannah said, tugging her mother's hand.
"We'll finish the yoga when Auntie Andrea is a little saner," Caroline
replied. "What's the matter, Andrea?"
"Well, the wedding dresses are done and everything...but the mother
in law from hell wants to help with everything!"
The twins gasped.
"Auntie Andrea said hell, Mammy!" Elle cried.
Andrea groaned.
Caroline shrugged. "Well, you did." She smirked. "Andrea, don't say
hell."
"Now that you've scolded me, what are we going to do about my dilemma?!"
Caroline smiled. "Come on, Andy. Let's get you a cup of tea."
***********************************************************************
Lily pressed her nose against the window, watching the snow. "Mammy?
Why is it snowing?"
Sharon glanced up from her book. "Because it's winter," she shrugged.
"But why is it winter cold?"
"Because... it's not hot."
"But why isn't summer cold and winter hot? Who decided that?"
Sharon blinked. "Johann Winter and Ernst Summer."
Lily giggled. "They have funny names." She watched the snowstorm for
a little longer. "But why is snow white?"
"It just is."
"Why does it snow snow? Can't it snow something cool, like marshmallows?"
Sharon looked up. "I don’t know Lily, why don't you ask Daddy?" Evil
evil evil.
"I did," she frowned. "He said to ask you."
Damn damn damn.
***************************************************************************
After finally convincing Andrea that her mother in law to be wasn't
the devil in disguise and wasn't out to get Andrea, Caroline and the twins
had gotten back to their yoga.
"In, out, in out...AHHHHHHHHH!!!!" Elle cried.
"What? What?" Caroline asked, worried.
Elle was paralysed in fear and pointed to her mother's stomach, her
mouth wide open.
Caroline peered down. Her t-shirt had ridden up a little as she had
been stretching but she couldn't see anything the matter. "Elle, what is
it?"
Hannah finally noticed it too, and with a squeal, hid behind her sister.
Caroline looked confused. "Girls, what is the matter?"
Frank peered over his paper in the corner of the room. He chuckled.
"Your bellybutton's popped out."
Caroline pointed to her belly button. "Is this the matter?"
The twins nodded.
"It's okay. It happens whenever someone's pregnant. The baby pushes
at it and it pops out."
"Naughty baby!" Elle cried.
"Auntie Sharon's is exactly the same," Caroline told them.
Frank got a sly smile on his face. "Yeah, why don't you ring and ask
her?"
"Okay," Hannah nodded and ran to the phone, with Elle behind her.
"You're going to get in so much trouble," Caroline said, following
the twins.
Frank chuckled. "This will be worth it."
"Hello?" came Sharon's voice through the phone.
"Auntie Sharon is your belly button all popped out?" Hannah asked.
"Huh?" Sharon said, not quite sure how to respond to that.
"You know, 'cause the baby pushes on it. Cause Mammy's is and it is
really gross and then she said that yours would be too and that would be
really gross as well but me and Elle wanted to know if yours is sticking
out."
Sharon tried to digest the information. "Uh, Hannah, does your Mammy
know that you've rung me?"
Caroline and Frank were doubled up in laughter, listening to the conversation
that was going on.
"Yeah. So is it true? Does yours pop out too? Or are you just going
to say it does so Mammy will look right? Maybe you better come over," Hannah
said.
Sharon sighed. "Can you put me onto your mum?"
***************************************************************************
Gavin turned the pages of his paper and pulled them down for a moment
as he took a sip of his coffee. Out of the corner of his eye he saw something
at the window. “Ahh! Geez! OWWWWWW!” In his surprise, his coffee had spilt
all over his trousers.
Lily ran in, Sharon walking quickly after her.
“Daddy! What happened?” she asked, as Sharon grabbed some paper towels.
“That evil kid is back!”
Sharon looked at the window. “Oh man, not again.”
Lily looked toward the window. “Fred!” she grinned. She ran to the
front door and tugged it open. “Come in, Fred.”
The boy wandered in and stared at everyone. Sharon shivered.
“Took a break over Christmas, did you?” Gavin asked, trying to get
rid of the hot coffee.
The boy just stood and stared.
“Make him go away, Sharon,” Gavin told her. “I’ve got to go change.”
Lily tugged at Fred’s hand. “It’s good to see you again, Fred. Did
you get some good Christmas presents?”
Fred was silent.
“I bet Frank sent him over here,” Gavin said, coming back down.
“Don’t be nasty,” Sharon told him. “Uh, Fred? Do your parents know
where you are?”
Lily studied Fred. “He says he doesn’t know.”
Sharon folded her arms. “Are you both telepathic?”
“Huh?”
“Never mind.”
*******************************************************************************
Jim walked into Caroline’s lounge and sat on the couch. “So, pregnant
sis, how goes it?”
Caroline sat on one of the ottomans and reached down to pick up a Barbie.
“What do you want?”
“What makes you think I want anything?”
Caroline gave him a look.
“Alright, alright. I need help from a woman.”
“I don’t want to know what you’re talking about, do I?”
Jim pouted. “It’s nothing dirty, Caroline.”
“What’s dirty?” Hannah came, running in with Elle behind her. She stood
stock-still in front of Jim. “EWWWW! Now I know what it is!”
”EWWWWWW!” Elle echoed.
“What is it?” Caroline asked, peering around.
“Uncle Jim’s feet!” Hannah said, and the twins burst out laughing.
Jim frowned and turned to Caroline, who was trying to hold her laughter
in. “Did you teach them to say that?”
“Me? Of course not!”
Jim rolled his eyes. “Anyway, are you going to help me or not?”
“We’ll help too, Uncle Jim!” the twins cried.
Jim looked worried and turned to Caroline. “Help,” he squeaked.
Caroline smirked. “Girls, how about you go into the studio and practice
your drums?”
“Doesn’t Uncle Jim need our help?” Elle asked.
“Not today,” Jim replied.
“Maybe tomorrow,” Caroline grinned.
“Okay,” Hannah conceded, and the girls ran off again.
Caroline turned to her brother. “Okay, what do you want help with?”
“Well, you’re a woman.”
“Last time I checked.”
”And you’ve been married for a while.”
“Yeah.”
“Well, my anniversary with Nea is coming up…and I have no idea what
to do.”
"What did you do last year?" Caroline asked.
"We went to a monster truck rally," Jim replied, as if it were the
most natural thing to do on an anniversary.
Caroline hit him. "Haven't you got a romantic bone in your body!?"
Jim rubbed his shoulder. "Ow. And yes I do have a romantic bone. Remember
how I proposed?"
Caroline rolled her eyes. "Yeah, with post-it notes."
"See! Romantic!"
"Hardly."
"Fine, what did you do for your last anniversary?"
"None of your business," she replied, blushing slightly.
"So, what am I supposed to do?"
"Well, take some time together and just do...what makes you both happy."
"Now look who's being dirty," Jim told her.
"You're a very immature man, Jim Corr," Caroline told him.
*******************************************************************************
"Now sit," Lily instructed.
'Fred' stood and stared at Lily, who glared back. "Sit, Fred!"
Nothing.
Lily frowned. "Siiiiit!" she whined. She hit herself on the hand. "Bad
Lily," she muttered. "Spending too much time with the twins."
She decided to try one more time. "Sit!" she commanded.
Nope, nothing. Desperate times...
Lily rummaged through her Barbie accessories. "Where... where... where...
Aha!" She pulled out the oversize bone belonging to Walk The Dog Skipper.
She stood on a mini chair and held it above Fred’s hair. "Sit!" she
instructed.
Fred studied the bone inquisitively. Lily slowly lowered it, and Fred
sat down.
She grinned. "Good boy," she said, ruffling his hair.
********************************************************************
Andrea shrieked.
Caroline and Sharon jumped. "What?" asked Caroline.
Andrea had plucked a pink fluffy infant jumpsuit off the rack, and
was presently burying her face in it. "It's soooo cuuuute," she swooned.
Sharon rolled her eyes. "Ca... I mean Andrea.I am not having my baby
dressed in something that looks like the Barbie outfit I get Lily for Christmas."
Caroline frowned. "You mean you can’t tell us apart yet?"
Andrea sneezed. "She's the pregnant one," she pointed out helpfully.
"Andrea! Put that back before you sneeze on it and we're forced to
buy it!" cried Caroline.
Andrea sniffed. "I guess it probably wasn't a good buy. Wouldn't want
it to make the baby sneeze for hours on end."
"Why are we even doing this?" asked Sharon. "We don't even know if
our babies are going to be boys or girls yet..."
"Because it's fun," Caroline clarified.
"I don't know, Caroline. I mean, we can watch Andrea get her head stuck
on odd places everyday..."
"Are you going to hold that bannister incident against me forever?"
demanded Andrea. "First of all, I was 6. Second of all, Caroline dared
me to so it's her fault."
Caroline giggled. "That was so funny,"
"No it wasn't," whined Andrea. "I was stuck there for 3 hours, and..."
"Look!" shrieked Caroline.
Caroline pounced on a bite sized t shirt with the Muppet Babies logo
on the back, and Animal on the front. "So buying this!"
"Caroline, I think Hannah may be too big for this," observed Andrea.
"You aren't funny," Caroline informed her as she went off to find a
cash register.
*****************************************************************************
Gavin dragged the tins of paint up the stairs and placed them in the
nursery. "Tell me again why we need so much paint?"
Sharon gestured to where Lily was. The little girl was wearing painting
clothes and a scarf around her head. "Lily's decided she's helping."
"Is that altogether wise?" Gavin asked, slightly worried.
"Do you want to argue with her?" Sharon inquired.
Gavin gulped. "Nope. If you need any more paint I'll just go down and
get some from the store."
Lily turned to her parents. "Heeelllooo? Are we starting yet?"
Gavin looked at Sharon. Sharon looked at Gavin. They sighed.
***************************************************************************
Hannah sat on her parents bed, reading the baby names book. Upside
down.
"Find anything good?" asked Elle.
Hannah frowned. "No...all these names are silly."
Elle snatched the book from Hannah. "That's because you can't read!"
"Neither can you!"
Elle folded her arms. "Hannah, this is not the time to dwell on silly
little details. We need to pick a name before preschool on Monday, when
Mammy comes for our show and tell"
Caroline materialised at the door. "When I do what?"
Elle and Hannah looked at their mother with wide, innocent eyes. "Don't
you remember, Mammy?" asked Elle. "You were going to come to preschool
two times... the time before, a few months ago..."
"...and once when you're big and fat!" finished Hannah, gleefully.
"I am not fat," defended Caroline. "I'm pregnant."
Hannah nodded. "Exactamondo. That's why you have to be our show and
tell!"
Caroline groaned. Not again. Once was bad enough. Couldn't they just
take their Christmas toys, like normal kids?
******************************************************************************
Gavin sat on the floor, carefully painting the wall above the skirting
boards. Lily sat behind him, carefully 'decorating' her fathers painting
clothes.
"I'll blame it on the weathermaaaaaaaaaaaan... standing on the shoooore,
calling out your naaaaaaaaaaaame," sang Lily.
Gavin gave Sharon a look she she came into the nursery. "Why, why,
why did you give her the B*Witched cd?"
"Never give it up nooooooooooooow, taking it to the limit..."
Sharon waved her hand dismissively. "The songs'll grow on you."
Lily started swirling her dry paintbrush around the walls. Lily
sat on the floor and pouted. She wasn't allowed to help, since she knocked
over a can of paint five minutes after they started. Not fair. Stupid thing
was on the floor, where anyone could have tripped over it...
Lily absently dipped her hand into the open paint jar. She giggled.
It was cold! And it felt really cool, kind of gluggy.
Lily wrinkled her nose. Now it was just feeling yucky. She slapped
her hand against the wall, leaving a nice handprint behind. "Pretty," she
grinned. Hey, if the wall looked this cool, she could put up with yucky
hands!
"Ohhhh Mr Postmaaaaaaaan," she sang, slapping more painty handprints
against the wall. Slap slap slap. What a cool sound! Slap slap...
"LILY GEORGIA BONNAR!!!"
************************************************************************
Caroline looked at Frank. "Please!"
"Honey, as much as I love you, I can't go to preschool with the girls.
You're the pregnant one, remember?"
"Stuff a pillow under your shirt."
Frank sighed. "Not only are you desperate, you're getting pathetic."
"You don't understand. The kids WATCH me! And the teacher thinks I'm
raising two vigilante Hitlers and that I tell them things they shouldn't
know."
Frank raised an eyebrow. "That's quite sad really. You, who have been
up on stage so many times, are scared of a bunch of kids staring at you."
“This is different. Those kids are scary,” Caroline replied.
“They’re kids!”
“That’s not the point,” Caroline said, folding her arms.
“Caroline, you’re a grown woman. Surely you can handle a bunch of kids.
You did it before!”
“I didn’t know what I was in for then,” Caroline replied.
****************************************************************************************
Lily watched her mother pack her lunch. “But why do I have to go to
school? You said I was grounded. That means not going anywhere!”
“Except school.”
“You didn’t say that part.”
“Lily, you’re in trouble. But you still have to go to school,” Sharon
said, putting the Barbie lunchbox into Lily’s Barbie backpack. “Besides,
we need you to learn all kinds of things so you can help with the baby.”
Lily rolled her eyes. “Mammy, we’re learning our ABC’s, not baby care.”
”Everything helps,” Sharon replied.
Lily held out her school tie and Sharon did it up.
“But…”
“No buts. Now, Daddy will take you to school, okay?”
“But what if the baby comes while I’m gone!”
“I promise that it won’t.”
“But what if it does!?”
“Lily, have I ever broken a promise?”
“No.”
“Exactly.”
Gavin walked into the room. “Ready to go, Lil?”
Lily looked morosely at her mother. “Yeah, okay.”
*****************************************************************************************
Caroline sat glumly in the plastic chair as Tommy Banks did his show
and tell of his lizard. She could already hear the twins begging for a
lizard...
"Mammy!" whispered Elle. "Can we have a lizard?"
"No."
"Awwwww..."
"... and I have to keep the lid on his tank or my kitty will come and
eat him all up."
Hannah put her hand up.
"Hannah?" asked Miss March.
"Did you bring your kitty?" she asked eagerly.
Tommy frowned. "No, my Mammy wouldn’t let me."
Hannah nodded. "Yeah, my Mammy wouldn’t let us take Daddy."
"Hannah!" scolded Caroline, colouring slightly.
"Well, you didn't!"
"Keep going, Tommy," said Miss March, glancing sideways at Caroline.
Caroline smiled sheepishly. Why oh why hadn't she changed preschools yet?
"So," said Miss March brightly, as Tommy put his lizard carefully back
into it's cage. "Hannah and Elle? I believe it's your turn now."
"Oh, goodie!" said Hannah, dragging Elle to her feet.
"Mammy, you have to stand up too," said Elle.
"Do I really have to?"
"Boys and girls," interrupted Miss March. "How about we have a backwards
show and tell, and all turn around to face Mrs Woods?"
Caroline whimpered.
"Why can't Mrs Hannah and Elle stand up?" asked a redheaded boy curiously.
"Because she's two people," announced Hannah proudly.
"Yeah," continued Elle. "Our Mammy came here a little while ago and
she had a baby in her tummy - she didnt eat it, remember, the tunn-"
Caroline coughed loudly, interrupting Elle.
Elle turned around. "Mammy, please be quiet, I'm addressing my public,"
announced Elle politely.
"Okay, honey," said Caroline, hiding an amused smile.
"Anyway," continues Elle. "She had a baby growing in her tummy the
last time she came, but now you can see it!"
Hannah prodded her mothers stomach. "It's in there!”
"I feel kind of sorry for it, because once when me and Hannah were
playing hide and seek, I hid under Mammy and Daddy's bed-"
"You what??"
"-and my neck got really sore because Hannah took ten million years
to find me-"
"That's because you went out of the boundary!"
"That's not important to the story. But the baby has to be in Mammy's
tummy for a long time, and I'm going to give it some owie cream for a birthday
present."
"Ooh! Birthdays!" cried Hannah. "Our birthday is on February 5, and
we're gonna be 5 years old!"
Caroline paled. She could sense where this was heading...
"And we're going to have a big party and you're all invited!" announced
Elle.
**************************************************************************
Frank put his head in his hands. "How many?"
"Thirty one. That's including the twins and if they all come."
"Thirty one! Caroline, we can barely cope with two! And you're going
to have a baby in two months!"
"I know it's a lot, but there wasn't really anything I could do. How
could I take back an invitation to those kids? Besides, I'll get my sisters
and Jim to help." She took his hand. "We've been through tough times before.
Surely this should be a walk through the park for us."
Frank frowned. "Caroline, we went for a walk in the park when you were
on tour in America and almost got mugged. Use another metaphor please."
Caroline decided to try another tactic. "Don't you love your daughters?"
Frank groaned. "Oh no, not this."
"And me...I'm carrying your child. And do I complain? Never. And let's
remember the birth of the twins...49 hours of labour because Hannah turned
around halfway!"
Frank put his head in his hands.
"Don't do that! You have no idea what being pregnant is like. Your
hormones go sideways, your twin daughters think your baby went through
your bellybutton and you get poked! Then the baby gets the hiccups, and
your whole stomach vibrates and...and...I need well...you know...it."
Frank shook his head. He had been so busy trying to work his way through
Caroline's mini rant that the end comment almost went over his head. "Huh?"
"I said I need..."
Frank put his hand up. "Yeah, yeah, I heard that."
She watched him carefully. "You're very quiet."
"I'm trying to work out whether this is one of those female things
where you say something but you mean something else."
Caroline frowned at him. "I'd watch it if I were you."
Frank pretended to kid around. "Hey, hey, just trying to break the
ice...you know me."
"Well you broke it, and now you're sinking."
Frank wondered how he could dig himself out of what was teaming up
to be a very painful situation. "Uh...so...um...well...where are the twins?"
Caroline decided to mimic her husband. "Um...well...uh...so...They're
at a friends."
"Right...so..." Frank twiddled his thumbs.
Caroline rolled her eyes. "Oh for heaven's sakes!" She grabbed his
hand and tugged him upstairs.

Nea frowned and wandered around the house. She heard a furious banging
noise and hoped...no prayed...that Jim wasn't trying to be the home handyman
again. "James Steven Ignatious Corr...I swear to God, if you make a hole
in any of my walls!"
Not able to find him in the main part of the house, Nea walked toward
the garage, where the furious banging got louder.
"OOWWWWWWWWWWWWW! DAMN! HELL!! (and other unpublishable words)"
Nea opened the door and found Jim on the floor, sucking his thumb,
the hammer thrown toward the other side.
"What the heck have you been doing? You know you're useless with woodwork."
Jim muttered something from around the thumb.
“Huh?”
Jim took the thumb out of his mouth. "I was making a birthday present
for the twins."
Nea couldn't help but smile and she sat down next to him. "What are
you making?"
"Well, I figured that they've got a dollhouse...so I thought I might
make them a little town. I made a couple of houses but the grocery store
is difficult."
Nea snuggled up and clutched his hand. "You are the sweetest man alive.
You're going to be a great father."
"Yeah. You know, I hope one of the girls has a boy. It'd be good to
have a nephew."
Nea smiled, wondering how long it would take Jim to get it. "Well,
you might get one yet."
"That'd be nice. So...wanna help me with the grocery store?"
Nea decided that the only way was to be blunt. "Jim, I'm pregnant."
"I thought I might paint the sign...Huh?" Jim stopped touching the
buildings and glanced at his wife. "What did you say?"
"I said I'm pregnant." She grinned. "I think there's something in the
water that the Corr family are drinking."
"Pregnant. Me. Father. Dad. Wow. Me. You. Parents."
"I'm glad you've fully grasped the concept," Nea smiled.

Caroline sighed with pure bliss as she slid into the hot bubble bath.
The house was silent and she could just relax for a while. She closed her
eyes and groaned as there was a small knock on the door. "Come in."
Elle wandered in, a grin on her face. "Hi, Mammy! Daddy said that you
were having a bubble bath."
Caroline cracked an eye open. "Really? And what is Daddy doing at the
moment?"
Elle scratched her chin. "Um..I think last time I saw him he was getting
out the sock 'em cleaner."
"And where's Hannah?"
"Here Mammy!" Hannah said, wandering in as well.
Caroline's eyes were closed, or else she would have seen the small
red wagon piled high with toys that came behind her daughter.
"Hi, Hannah," Caroline murmured.
"We thought that since you were having a bubble bath, we'd bring you
some toys to play with," Hannah smiled.
Caroline's eyes flew open. "What?"
Elle placed two rubber duckies on the water. "Here's Bill and Bob."
Then came five ships. "And our sailing ships."
Hannah pulled out a toy cow. "And our Millie the Moo Moo. She only
has one eye cause Elle scratched the other one out."
"Did not!" Elle cried.
Hannah rolled her eyes. "Whatever you say. And here's Bathtime Fun
Kelly."
"The bubble bath water squirts into her bath, see?" Elle said, demonstrating.
"And here's the squirters from McDonald's!" Elle giggled, squirting
a bit.
Caroline rubbed the bathwater from her eyes. "Girls, that's wonderful."
When the girls started playing with their own toys in the water (Hannah
had by then dumped all of their McDonald's toys into the bath), Caroline
decided she needed help.
"FRANK!!!" she cried.
Hannah blinked. "Mammy, do you want Daddy?"
Caroline nodded. "Yes sweetie, could you get him for me?"
Hannah nodded and went to the door. She stuck her head around it. "DADDY!!!!!!!
MAMMY WANTS YOU!!!!!!!!!!"
Caroline nearly sank down into the bathtub with a sigh, but Elle tugged
at her shoulder.
"Don't drown Mammy!" she said, her eyes wide.
"Hannah, what have I said about yelling in the house?" Caroline asked,
slowly coming to the surface.
Hannah looked confused. "But you did, Mammy."
"Yes, but I am in the bathtub and I need Daddy here. You could have
gone and got him."
"Someone called?" Frank asked, appearing at the doorway. Seeing the
toys in the bathtub and the twins grinning happily, he didn't even ask
what the matter was. "Girls, how about you come and help Daddy for a while
and let Mammy play with the toys by herself, okay?"
*********************************************************************************************************
"You want me to what!?" Andrea cried into the phone.
"Just for one night, Andy. I love my girls more than anything, but
I've had their entire McDonald's toy collection, plus Bathtime Fun Kelly
in my bathtub, and Frank managed to blow up the vacumn cleaner...don't
ask."
Andrea mentally shook her head. "But the twins? Have a sleepover here?"
"I'm begging you."
Andrea narrowed her eyes. "Are you begging on your knees?"
"I'm seven months pregnant, Andrea. You try getting on your knees when
you're seven months pregnant."
"Sheesh. Fine, I'll take them."
"Bless you. Frank will have them over there soon."
"Tonight?"
"Andrea..."
"Okay, okay, but Shaun is coming tonight."
"You'll manage."
*******************************************************************************
Lily conscientiously painted the palm of her hand red, then made prints
on the large roll of white paper she had spread in front of her. "Nice,"
she grinned, then started to paint her hand green, over the remaining red.
By the time she was satisfied, she had a massive sheet of paper covered
in red, yellow, blue, green, and a few brownish handprints. And a few on
her face, from where she had unthinkingly scratched her nose.
"Maaaaaaaaaamyyyyyy!" she sang out, carefully printing 'Lily Bonner,
age 6' in thick, pink texta at the bottom of the sheet.
"Mhm?" Asked Sharon materialising at the door.
Lily held up her work. "This is for the baby's room," she said proudly.
"Because it didn't get to have the ones I made for its walls"
"Awww, that's so sweet, honey," said Sharon, reaching out to give her
daughter a hug. She jumped back when she saw her hands. "Um... wash your
hands first."
************************************************************************************
Andrea smiled as the twins walked in her door. Frank was armed with
two sleeping bags, two pink pillows, and two huge bags.
“This is for overnight, isn’t it?” Andrea asked, slightly worried.
Frank nodded. “Yeah.” He turned to the twins as he put the things in
the guest room. “Now, I want you to be good for Auntie Andrea okay?”
Elle smiled sweetly and glanced at her aunt. “Of course we will, Daddy.
We’re going to have a fun sleepover with Auntie Andrea.”
“Yeah, we’ll watch movies and have popcorn and build a tent,” Hannah
assured him.
Frank paled slightly and turned to Andrea. “Uh, light on the sugar,
okay? Caroline said that when they come home, she doesn’t want to have
to scrape them off the walls.”
Andrea frowned. “Tell Caroline from me…” She remembered the twins were
still there. “Have a nice night.”
The girls kissed their father and waved as he left. Andrea turned to
them. “Okay, how about you guys go get your jammies on, okay?”
The twins nodded and ran into the bedroom. There was a knock at the
door and Andrea answered it.
“Hi, Shaun.”
“Hey,” Shaun said, kissing her on the cheek. “The twins here?”
Andrea nodded. “Oh yeah.”
With a squeal the twins ran into the front room. Elle had managed to
get her pyjama pants on but her top was halfway on and she seemed stuck.
Hannah had just managed the pants and came out dragging the top behind
her.
“Help please, Auntie Andrea,” Hannah said, holding out her top.
“Me first” came a muffled voice from Elle.
Andrea quickly righted the girls and they stared up at Shaun.
“Uncle Giles sure has changed,” Elle murmured.
Hannah elbowed her. “Don’t be a dummy! This is Uncle Shaun!” She whispered
in her sisters ear. “The authors didn’t want no honey situations.”
“I think you mean sticky,” Elle replied.
”Whatever.”
“So, what did you guys want to do?” Andrea asked.
“Can we build tents in the living room?” Elle asked.
Shaun nodded. “Sure, I’ll help with that.”
Andrea smiled. “I’ll go make some popcorn.”
*****************************************************************************************************
Caroline and Frank were heavily making out in their bedroom, taking
advantage of the peace and quiet.
Then the phone rang.
“Ignore it,” Frank said, moving further down her neck.
“It could be Andrea.”
“Andrea is more than capable of looking after the twins. Besides, she
has Shaun there.”
“But…don’t stop…something bad might have happened.”
With a resigned sigh, Frank picked up the phone. “Hello?”
“I’m pregnant!” Jim cried out on the phone.
Frank groaned and hung up.
“Who was it?” Caroline asked, sinking back into the pillows again.
“Jim’s pregnant,” Frank replied, kissing her.
**************************************************************************************************
Jim stared oddly at the phone and then at Nea. “That was odd.”
“What?” Nea asked from behind her book.
“Frank hung up.”
“That is odd. Try Andrea.”
**************************************************************************************************
Andrea narrowly dodged being hit by popcorn as she lunged over the
makeshift tent to grab the phone.
“Hello?” she panted.
“Did I interrupt something?” Jim asked.
“No, I just climbed over a makeshift tent.”
“Huh?”
“The twins are spending the night.”
“So that’s why Frank hung up on me.”
“Frank hung up on you?”
“Doesn’t matter. Guess what!”
“Um…how if you were here I’d probably punch you in the nose because
I almost broke an ankle getting over that tent?”
“Uh. No. I’m pregnant.”
Andrea sighed. “Jim, we discussed this. When all the forums at COL
were discussing the possibility of every one in the band being pregnant,
they were only joking about you.”
“No, not me personally. Nea!”
“Wow! That’s great!” Andrea cried. She frowned slightly. “I think there’s
something in the water we’ve been drinking.”
****************************************************************************************************
Sharon wound her way through the mess of the Barbie safari to answer
the phone, making a mental note to get Lily to clean up.
"Hello?"
"I'm pregnant!"
Sharon rolled her eyes and hung up.
"Who was it?" asked Gavin.
"Prank callers," she replied.
******************************************
Elle tugged at Andrea's sleeve. "Auntie Andrea, what did Daddy hang
up?"
"Uh..." Andrea glanced at Shaun for help, who shrugged. "Ummmmm...
Daddy was hanging up his clothes. Because he was cleaning." she answered
hurriedly.
Hannah frowned. "But they clean when we're home. They're so boring."
Andrea decided it would be safest to change the subject. "What do we
want to watch?" she asked them.
Elle's eyes lit up. "The Wizard of Oz!"
Hannah looked worried. "The scary movie?"
"Is she scared of the wicked witch?" Andrea asked Elle.
"No...she's scared of the Tin Man," said Elle, rolling her eyes.
"His head is pointy!" cried Hannah, getting teary. "And he's all silvery
and he has a funny voice!"
Andrea pulled Hannah into her lap. "How about we watch something that’s
not scary," she said.
"Hannah's scared of everything," said Elle.
"Am not!"
"Oh yeah? Then let's watch Hook!"
"Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!" sobbed Hannah.
"Hey, whoa, Elle! Don't scare her," said Andrea, slightly taken aback.
"Hey, Hannah," said Shaun, gently pulling Hannah's thumb out of her
mouth. "Do you like the Muppet Movie?"
Hannah grinned. "I like muppets!" she exclaimed happily.
"Awwww, we've seen that movie a gazillion times," groaned Elle.
"But I want Muppets!"
"And I want Oz!"
"Muppets!"
"Oz!"
"MUPPETS!"
"OZ!"
**************************************************************************************************
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!!
Sharon growled. This was the fourth time...
"What?" she snapped into the phone.
"Jeez Sharon, it's me!"
"Jim?"
"Who else?"
"Of course, I should have known it was you, what with you announcing
your pregnancy and all... what was I thinking?"
"I may give up on this. You're not the first one to hang up on me."
"Who else did? Andrea?"
"No, Frank."
"Did you harass him as well?"
"Well, I called Andrea next, and the twins were with her and Shaun.
I decided against calling them back."
****************************************************************************************
The phone rang again, albeit under Frank's shirt.
"This time, the machine is getting it," Caroline replied, rolling onto
her side.
Answering Machine: Hi, This is Caroline and Frank. (The twins can be
heard in the background going: And us! And us!) We're not in right now,
but leave a message and someone will get back to you.
A throat clears on the other end. "Uh, guys, this is Jim. Please don't
pick up the phone because I don't want to get yelled at and for that matter,
I really don't want to know what you're doing. Remember, I'm the one that
lives in denial about how you really got pregnant, Caroline. Anyway, Nea's
expecting. Something in the water, eh?
The message fell on deaf ears. They'd check the machine tomorrow.
************************************************************************
Jim popped his head into the bedroom. “Are we having a boy or a girl?”
Nea raised an eyebrow and put down her book. “How am I supposed to
know that?”
“Well, I don’t know. Don’t pregnant women know these things?”
“Have Caroline and Sharon mentioned it?”
Jim scratched his head. “Nah. The only thing I got out of Caroline
was some rant about bellybuttons and tunnels.”
Nea looked confused but decided not to dwell on it. “I have no idea
whether it’s going to be a boy or a girl. Currently, it is a mass of cells.”
Jim frowned. “That sounds disgusting. But what am I supposed to call
the baby? He or she? I can’t call it it!”
Nea chuckled. “Why not? I bet your parents called you it before they
knew you were a boy. And I bet your sisters have called you it for years.”
Jim suddenly looked panicked. “I’m going to call Daddy.”
***************************************************************************************************
Andrea rewound the tape with a sigh and pressed play again. There was
nothing more mindnumbing that watching the entire Muppet video collection,
which Frank had so helpfully slipped into the girls bags. On the other
hand, it was a nice way to spend some time with Shaun while the girls were
occupied. She wandered into the kitchen where he was cleaning up after
the pizza. The girls were not exactly delicate eaters.
“I can’t believe that two four year old were able to digest an entire
pizza by themselves,” Shaun said, shaking his head. “I hate to think what
Caroline and Frank go through in grocery bills.”
Andrea wrinkled her nose. “You think they’re full now? Wait half an
hour. The minute they see food in the movie, they’ll want it.”
Shaun looked worried. “I don’t know we should be feeding them some
of the things those Muppets eat.”
Andrea sidled up next to him. “I don’t want to talk about Muppets.”
Shaun raised an eyebrow. “Really?”
They kissed slowly and were interrupted by Hannah and Elle with a chorus
of “AUNTIE ANDREA!!”
Andrea turned around, blushing slightly. “Mhm?”
“We wanna toast marshmallows!” Elle grinned.
“Please,” Hannah said quickly.
“Marshmallows?” Andrea said, paling slightly.
*****************************************************************************************************
Caroline watched Frank slip the DVD of Notting Hill into the player
and snuggled up to him when he came back.
“It’s so good to watch a movie by ourselves…that doesn’t involve furry
animals of any kind.”
Frank grinned. “I don’t know, Caro. I think Spike could be construed
as a furry animal sometimes.”
“I want a chair like they have in that garden,” Caroline told him.
“It’ll be the next thing we get,” he smiled.
*********************************************************************************************
Hannah and Elle watched as Shaun started the fire in the barrel.
“Oooh,” they chorused, as the flame started.
“You’re very handy,” Elle told Shaun.
“Thanks,” Shaun replied, somewhat bewildered.
Andrea opened the packet of marshmallows and put them onto a stick.
She handed it to Elle.
“How comes Elle gets the first one!” cried Hannah.
Elle smirked. “Because I’m betterer.”
Hannah began to sniff. Andrea understood the warning signs and quickly
placed another marshmallow on a different stick and handed it to her.
“The only reason Elle got hers first was because she was closer. And
because I don’t have four hands.”
Hannah and Elle giggled uproariously.
“Auntie Andrea would look funny with four hands!” Elle smiled.
Andrea frowned slightly and Shaun quickly stopped laughing.
“Now, girls, come a bit closer to the fire,” Shaun told them.
“We can’t,” Hannah said.
“Sure you can. Just as close as Auntie Andrea.”
”Mammy says we’re not allowed.”
“Yeah, she says we always have to ask.”
“Well, I give you permission to be closer to the fire,” Andrea smiled.
Elle shook her head. “Nuh uh.”
“We has to ask Mammy,” Hannah affirmed.
“You know what?” Andrea said. “We’ll call them.”
Shaun frowned. “Is that such a good idea?” He caught the looks from
the girls. “Since they’re, you know, cleaning and all.”
Andrea sighed. “Let’s just pray that they’re not too…well…busy.”
**********************************************************************************************
“I swear to God,” Frank groaned, as he grabbed the phone. “What!”
Andrea held the phone away from her ear. “Uh, hi Frank.”
Frank quickly turned from cranky man to concerned parent. “What’s the
matter? Are the girls okay?”
“Geez, have you and Caro been drinking an abnormal amount of coffee
tonight or something? You’re so tense!”
“Are the girls okay?”
“Look, they bugged me and Shaun for toasted marshmallows so we got
everything ready and now they won’t go near the fire because they said
Caro doesn’t let them.”
“Of course we don’t! Can you imagine those particular four year olds
let loose near fire?”
Andrea sighed. “Uh, can you put Caroline on the phone?”
“It’s your nutty sister,” Frank said, passing the phone to his wife.
He kissed her gently. “I’ll go make some hot chocolate.”
“Hello?”
“Okay, your twins bugged me until Shaun started a fire to toast marshmallows
and now they won’t toast them because they won’t go near the fire unless
you tell them they can.”
“Take a breath,” Caroline warned her sister. “I don’t think the twins
have mastered CPR yet.”
“Very funny. Talk to your children,” Andrea said, handing the phone
over.
“Hey Mammy!” Hannah cried into the phone. “We’re toasting marshmallows.”
“Except we’re not really cause we’re being really good and staying
away from the fire!” Elle assured her.
“I’m very proud of you both. But in this case, because Auntie Andrea
and Uncle Shaun are there and helping, you can toast your marshmallows.
Now can you put me back onto Auntie Andrea?”
”Thankyou,” Andrea said gratefully.
“You’re welcome. Now as for everything else, you’re going to have to
deal with it yourself, because I swear if we get any more phonecalls…”
“Enough said!” Andrea replied. “No more phonecalls.”
************************************************************************************************************
“OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!” came the cry from the new nursery.
Gavin and Sharon glanced at each other and ran up to the room. (Gavin
ran, Sharon walked fast).
“Lily?” Gavin called, turning the light on.
“My arm hurts.”
*********************************************************************************************************
“It’s a very minor burn,” the nurse assured Andrea, as she sat next
to Hannah in the doctor’s room.
Elle peered over. “Can I have a special bandage too?”
The nurse smiled. “Sure.”
“How long will she have to keep it on?”
“A few days. It’ll be a bit sore for awhile and she will need the dressing
changed, but she’s going to be fine.”
**********************************************************************************************************
Shaun stood up as he saw Sharon, Gavin and Lily walking out of X-Ray.
“Is Andrea okay?” Sharon asked, rushing over.
Shaun nodded. “Yeah. We were toasting marshmallows and Hannah’s fell
in and she wanted to get it and well…you can guess the rest. It’s not major
though. They’re just getting it bandaged up.” He glanced at Lily. “What
happened to you?”
“She broke her arm,” Gavin replied. “She was trying to put pictures
up on the wall of the nursery and she fell off the ladder.”
”Which she shouldn’t have been on,” Sharon said sternly to her daughter.
Lily held her cast up and whimpered.
*********************************************************************************************************
Andrea paced her bedroom after they had put the twins to bed.
“Caroline is going to kill me.”
Shaun watched her. “She’s not going to kill you.” He tugged on her
arm. “Get into bed. You’re making me dizzy.”
Andrea sat down beside him and sighed. “I burnt her child!”
“It’s not like you did it on purpose!”
A knock came at the door. Soon, two little heads peered around the
door.
“We can’t sleep, Auntie Andrea,” Elle said.
Andrea looked at them. “Your Mammy said that you might try this. Back
to bed with both of you.”
Elle glanced at Hannah and Hannah sighed.
“My finger hurts,” Hannah said, holding her hand up.
Andrea folded her arms. “That’s outright blackmail that is.”
Taking the reply as a yes, the two girls crawled up onto the bed.
**************************************************************************
Andrea awoke the next morning with a start, hearing the blaring of
cartoons coming from downstairs. She let out an incoherent moan and shook
her head at Shaun, who was sound asleep. Still in her Elmo pajamas she
shuffled downstairs to the living room, where Elle and Hannah had the TV
on.
“Morning Auntie Andrea!” they cried exuberantly.
Andrea put a hand on her head. She wasn’t quite ready for this much
energy so early in the morning.
“What can we have for breakfast Auntie Andrea?”
“Um…” Andrea racked her brain for what she had in her cupboards that
the twins would like. “Um…porridge?”
Elle and Hannah scrunched up their noses.
“But we can have that at home!” Elle complained.
Hannah held her finger up. “My finger hurts,” she pouted.
“The blackmail will not work at present,” Andrea replied. “Um, I’m
going to go upstairs and wake up a little more, and you guys go into the
kitchen and see what you’d like for breakfast.”
**************************************************************************************************
Lily crawled up onto her parent’s bed. “Can I have icecream for breakfast?”
Sharon peered over the newspaper. “On what planet did you think that
would work?”
“I heard one of the doctors say to another kid that icecream was good
for breakfast!”
Gavin chuckled and Sharon glared at him.
“Lily, honey, that kid had just had her tonsils out. You broke your
arm,” Sharon explained.
“So?” Lily replied.
“So, when you have your tonsils out, your mouth and throat are sore,
so it’s nice to have icecream then.”
“But my arm is sore!”
“Daddy will explain it further,” Sharon said, getting up and going
into the bathroom.
Lily grinned and crawled onto her father’s side, watching him carefully.
***********************************************************************************************************
Half an hour later, Andrea remembered in her haze that she had left
two four year olds alone in the kitchen. With a startled yelp she dashed
downstairs, listening to the absolute quiet. Which could not be good.
Indeed, it was not good. Every nook and cranny of Andrea’s kitchen
had been explored as the twins had searched for food. Cupboard doors were
open, juice was spilled, icecream was melting cereal was scattered and
the fridge door was open. Andrea groaned and shut it.
“Elle? Hannah?”
Two icecream covered four year olds raced into the kitchen. “Yes, Auntie
Andrea?”
“Icecream for breakfast?”
“You said to find what we’d like,” Elle said, grinning.
Andrea inwardly groaned. As much as she hated to admit it, the twins
were right. She sincerely hoped that Frank would come to pick them up soon.
***************************************************************************************************
A wet and bedraggled Andrea answered the door two hours later. Her
bathroom was now flooded and she had just finished washing sticky children.
“Wow, looks like you guys had fun,” Caroline said, raising an eyebrow.
Two naked four year olds dashed downstairs and launched themselves
at their parents.
Frank looked at Andrea with a smirk. “Couldn’t even dress them, huh?”
It was then that Caroline noticed the bandage on Hannah’s finger. “ANDREA!!!!
What did you do to Hannah?!”
“Me? I didn’t do anything! It wasn’t my fault! Hannah’s hand kind of
accidentally touched some fire.”
“Oh my poor baby,” Caroline said, hugging her close. “How bad is it?”
“Uh hello? Destroyed kitchen? Flooded bathroom? Personal hygiene nil?”
Andrea said, waving her hands around.
“You burnt my child!” Caroline told her.
Shaun had just arrived and Andrea gave him an, “I told you so” look.
He shrugged.
“It was an accident, Caroline. Andrea didn’t mean it,” Shaun replied.
Caroline nodded. “I know. I just can’t believe that they caused all
this!”
“Auntie Andrea said we could go and look for something we liked for
breakfast,” Elle grinned.
”Yeah, we had icecream!” Hannah cried.
Andrea looked sheepish and Caroline sent her a look.
“You let them have icecream for breakfast?”
“Well…I was kind of half asleep…and they were all energetic…and I sort
of left them alone in the kitchen…”
Frank eventually came downstairs with the twins and their bags.
“We’re ready Mammy,” Elle smiled.
“What do we say to Auntie Andrea?”
“Thankyou for letting us stay with you Auntie Andrea and Uncle Shaun,”
the twins chorused and after hugging the two, raced out with their father
to the car.
Caroline turned to her sister. “Thankyou so much for last night.”
Andrea wiggled her eyebrows. “Get up to much?”
Caroline tapped her nose. “See you guys later.”
************************************************************************************************************
Lily looked at her clothes set out on her bed. Her pants were easy
to get on…she just had to lie on the bed and pull them up…but her shirt
she wasn’t so sure about.
She tried pulling it on but that didn’t work. So she lay back on her
bed and tried to wiggle into it. But that didn’t work either. After several
more attempts, she collapsed on the bed, exhausted.
“MAMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
***********************************************************************************************************
Caroline noticed the twins walk into the kitchen and sit on the table.
“No snacking before dinner.”
”We don’t want one thankyou, Mammy,” Elle smiled sweetly.
Caroline narrowed her eyes. “What do you girls want?”
“You look beautiful today, Mammy,” Hannah told her.
“Nuh uh, Hannah, she looks beautiful every day!” Elle said.
Caroline folded her arms. “Alright, what’s going on?”
“We wanna do kung fu, Mammy!” Hannah cried.
Caroline blinked. “I’m sorry, what?”
“We saw Jet Li, Mammy.”
“Accidentubly,” Elle assured her. She elbowed her sister. “Daddy’s
said not to tell.”
Caroline raised an eyebrow. “Did he really?”
“No?” Hannah tried.
Caroline frowned.
“Yes?” Elle tried.
“How about the two of you go upstairs and play while Mammy has a little
discussion with Daddy.”
The girls looked at each other and started chanting, “Daddy’s in trouble,
Daddy’s in trouble…”
Caroline sent them a look and the two girls scurried upstairs. Caroline
shook her head in amusement and wandered into the living room where a guilty
looking Frank was just putting The Little Mermaid in the player.
“Jet Li?”
“It was an accident Caro, I swear. I thought they were playing upstairs
and then I heard them trying to do kung fu and then they ran.”
Caroline frowned at him. “What did they see?”
“No blood. I know that.”
“That’s very comforting.”
“They want to do kung fu now.”
“Maybe it’s a healthy thing. I want them to be able to defend themselves,”
Frank suggested.
Caroline nodded. “Absolutely. But now? They’re four years old and already
they’re learning to play the drums. I don’t want to put too much on them.”
“And yoga,” Frank grinned.
Caroline sighed. “Yes, and yoga.”
“I think we should let them give it a try,” Frank said. “And if they
don’t like it, we’ll pull them out.”
***************************************************************************************************************
It was the night of the awards. Elle wore a white dress with pink flowers,
while Hannah wore a white dress with purple flowers. Caroline had braided
their hair and Elle had a pink ribbon while Hannah had a purple one. Both
wore black Mary Janes with white socks that had little frills on them.
Lily wore a red dress with her hair out and a red hairband. She too
wore black Mary Janes with white socks.
Caroline, dressed in a dark green dress looked at her daughters. “Now,
what did we say about tonight?”
“To behave ourselves. We know, Mammy, we were there last year when
you got your third Wory Galactic award,” Elle said, rolling her eyes.
Caroline turned to Andrea. “I must be insane. Taking two four year
olds to an awards ceremony.”
“It’s a pretty big deal, Caro,” Andrea replied, herself wearing a black
dress. “We are receiving a lifetime achievement award.”
Caroline stared down at herself. “And I’m seven months pregnant. I’m
certifiably insane.”
Sharon chuckled. “Don’t feel sorry for yourself, Caro. I’m seven months
pregnant too. And I’m taking a six year old with me.” Sharon wore a light
blue dress.
“Your daughter isn’t a vigilante Hitler.”
“You really need to let that go,” Andrea suggested. She turned her
head to the door. “Wow.”
“What?” Caroline asked, also turning to the door. “Wow indeed.”
“You guys scrub up pretty well,” Sharon grinned.
Frank, Giles and Gavin stood in the doorway, clad in tuxedos.
“I hate this thing,” Frank muttered, tugging at his tie.
“Stop it,” Caroline warned him, straightening it slightly.
“I agree with you,” Jim said, coming into the room. His tie was in
a rather bedraggled state, after he had tugged and manipulated it at least
half a dozen times.
Nea, dressed in a purple dress, followed him in and swatted at his
hand. “I swear, this is the last time I’m doing your tie. If you wreck
it again, you go tieless.”
”Meanie,” Jim pouted, as she fixed his tie.
“Are we going yet?” Lily asked, tugging at her mother’s hand.
“As soon as your Uncle Jim looks presentable,” Sharon replied, patting
Lily on the head.
*****************************************************************************
Hannah, Elle and Lily swung their feet under the table as the awards
went on. Finally, the announcer, who the family had dubbed the really annoying
guy, came over again.
“Ladies and gentleman, please welcome, Bono!”
The room burst into applause as Bono walked out onstage.
“It’s Uncle Bono,” Lily smiled.
“Is it your turn now, Mammy?” Hannah asked, patting her mother’s arm.
Caroline nodded. “Mhm.”
”Good evening,” Bono smiled, glancing down at the crowd. “Having been
up here myself as both a recipient and now a presenter, I can really say,
that for me to present tonight’s Lifetime Achievement Award to the recipients
is truly an honour. I suppose the best place to begin, would be in 1990
when Alan Parker decided to go to Dublin to find people to star in his
film, The Commitments. Anyone remotely musical went along, including tonight’s
band, The Corrs.” Bono paused, as the room burst into applause. He continued.
“At that stage, Andrea was sixteen, Caroline was seventeen, Sharon was
nineteen and Jim was twenty-three. Needless to say, from that small beginning,
where it has become a spectator sport to find Caroline in the movie, one
of the world’s greatest bands was born. When their debut album Forgiven,
Not Forgotten was released, it spoke for itself. Talk On Corners stayed
in the Top 50 for over two months. In Blue took the States by storm. Live
albums including Unplugged and Live In Dublin were instant best-sellers.
Runaway, has stuck in everyone’s heads since the moment it was released.
They’ve won Brit Awards, Grammy’s, and Caroline has won numerous Rory Gallagher
Awards. And even, after being married and having children, they still make
music. Tonight, the music industry salutes one of the best bands ever created…and
we have their parents to thank for it. But before I give them their awards…we
had a little bit of a skulk around and found some things that had to be
show tonight…”
A medley of the Corrs songs comes on, beginning with Runaway. Shots
begin at the Commitments auditions, following right through their career,
including a couple of family photos.
“We’re on the screen!” Elle grinned, and Frank quickly shushed her.
After it had finished, Bono appeared back on screen. “Ladies and gentlemen,
please welcome the recipients of this years Lifetime Achievement Award…The
Corrs!”
