Up the Altar in Majorca
Love Rains in Spain as Storms Nearly Wreck Corrs Beauty's Big Wedding Day

Caroline Corr's fairytale Spanish wedding went ahead yesterday - but only after freak thunder storms threatened to ruin her big day.

The superstar drummer, 28, tied the knot with Dublin property developer Frank Woods in a beautiful mountainside church.

But the ceremony almost turned to disaster when an electric storm cut all power to the tiny Majorcan village of Deia - and the priest  called the ceremony OFF. Moments later he changed his mind despite floods and lightning after an anxious plea from Caroline.

Villagers flocked to the St John The Baptist church with candles in an effort to generate enough light to allow the ceremony to continue.

Caroline chose the picturesque village so the ceremony could be in the sunshine.

But as the drama unfolded guests including Bono, his wife Ali, Eddie Jordan and The Edge watched in disbelief from the hill leading  up to the church.

They were finally allowed into the church at 5pm but Bono - whose new single is called Electric Storm - and Ali were smuggled in the back door.

But the tense build-up didn't stop Caroline from looking like a million dollars when she arrived at the church at 5.35pm.

Onlookers gasped approval when she stepped out of a black limousine in a striking traditional white dress.

Her bridesmaids - sisters Andrea and Sharon - followed wearing long red silk dresses and clutching flowers as she was led down the aisle by father Gerry.

Close friends, members of family and celebrities watched on during the hour -long ceremony.

After exchanging vows at the hillside church - the newlyweds held an extravagant pounds 400,000 reception at the exclusive La Residentia hotel. White lilies and roses were placed on all the tables and guests were greeted with champagne and cocktails.

One wedding guest said: "We were all devastated for Caroline because it was cancelled at one stage. The priest just said that the church had been blacked out and there was no way it could go on. But then all the villagers got involved and we all did our bit to help.

"It was an extraordinary rollercoaster ride of a day and some of the guests looked a little bewildered."

The wedding was surrounded by a huge security operation to stop fans and paparazzi gatecrashing.

But they were more busy trying to keep local floods away from the church doors as guest watched the ceremony.

One explained: "We are meant to be keeping an eye on the surrounding areas but the biggest threat is the rain.

"We are used to doing big wedding ceremonies like this but the weather has given us an unexpected problem."

A pal of the bride said Caroline saw the funny side of the frantic build up.

She said: "She joked 'maybe someone is trying to tell us something'.

"At first she heard that the church had a power cut and she was nervous then.

"But when all the villagers started helping it was like something out of a movie.

"The ceremony was simple but very beautiful. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

"Caroline looked stunning and so did her sisters. Jim was dressed in black and white."
