The Charlie’s Angels of pop, Ireland’s Corrs set their sights on
these shores.
“It’s always the girls,” sighs Jim Corr of Ireland’s the Corrs.
Waiting patiently as usual while his three fetching bandmates, who
also happen to be his sisters, get done up for a photo shoot in their Manhatten
hotel suite, Corr, 36, recalls how after a gig opening for the Rolling
Stones, he was thrilled to meet Mick Jagger. The mossy Stone though, only
had eyes for the women in the family: Sharon, 30, Caroline, 27, and Andrea,
26.
“Mick didn’t even see me,” Jim says.
A similar eclipse has threatened to engulf the Corrs themselves. Although
they have sold nearly 20 million CDs since 1995 and topped the charts in
30 countries with their Celtic pop sound, they barely made a blip in the
US market – until now. The group’s third studio CD, In Blue, made its debut
at No.21 in Billboard and is among the “best mainstrean pop albums” of
the year, says USA Today. The Corrs credit producer (and Shania Twain’s
husband); “Mutt” Lange, who cowrote the single “Breathless” with lead singer
Andrea.
“He’s incredibly clever,” says Sharon, the band’s violin player, “and
so are we.”
Ultimately, however, the Corrs, all of whom are single (AN: That is
incorrect) and live in Dublin, thank their parents, both amateur musicians,
for inspiring them.
“She was our biggest fan,” Jim says of mother Jean, who died of lung
disease at age 57 last year after 36 years of marriage to Gerry Corr, now
in his 60s. “It’s a pity she’s not here to experience our success. She
was so proud that we had a dream and went for it.”
